San Francisco, CA -- The world's best digital creations were honored last
night when the NewMedia INVISION 98 award winners were announced at a gala
awards presentation, held at the Argent Hotel in downtown San Francisco.
Established in 1993, the annual awards recognize excellence in digital
work from around the globe. The awards presentation was held on the
second night of the NewMedia INVISION 98 Awards Festival, running Nov. 11
- 13 in San Francisco.
The evening's surprise came when two Best of Show winners were
announced. Ceremony of Innocence: The Mysterious Correspondence of Griffin
and Sabine was honored with Best of Show, along with an Award of
Excellence and a Gold award in the category of General Interest Adult.
Based on Nick Bantock's best-selling Griffin and Sabine book series, the
CD-ROM features the voices of Isabella Rossellini, Ben Kingsley, and Paul
McGann. It was produced by Gerrie Villon and creative director Alex
Mayhew for Real World MultiMedia.
Sharing the Best of Show honors was The X-Files Game, produced by
HyperBole Studios. In the interactive game, players assume the role of an
FBI agent searching for missing agents Mulder and Scully. The game allows
players to select the ambience of a scene and shift perspective from first
to third person. The X-Files Game also received an Award of Excellence, a
Gold award in the category of Best Digital Storytelling, and Silver award
in the category of Best Video.
"The NewMedia INVISION Awards represent the very best digital work
produced today in the world," says executive director Hal Josephson.
"This year, with creative and technical boundaries pushed further than
ever and a record number of entries, the competition for the INVISION
Awards of Excellence was stronger than ever."
This year, 1,080 entrants vied for the prestigious awards across
40 categories, with Gold, Silver, and Bronze winners announced. At the
awards gala, nine Awards of Excellence were presented, along with Best of
Show(s) and Best of Web awards.
Best of Web was awarded to Taz for The MediaBoy Website
(www.mediaboy.net), a dense and compelling experiment in pushing the
limits of web design. The site also received an Award of Excellence, and
a Gold award in the category of Personal Web Site.
Other NewMedia INVISION 98 Award of Excellence winners are DroidWorks
(Lucas Learning); HotBot (Wired Digital); ODE Architect (Intellipro); The
Apple Store (Adgacency); A-Klasse, Ein Starkes StŸeck Zukuft (Scholz &
Volkmer GmbH); Chroniques de l'Afrique Sauvage (Montparnasse Multimedia).
The NewMedia INVISION Awards are part of the annual NewMedia
INVISION Awards Festival, a three-day celebration of digital excellence
featuring the NewMedia INVISION Awards presentation, the INSIGHT
conference for digital professionals, and the popular PlayLand Gallery, an
interactive showcase of work by award winners and finalists.
